Amniotic fluid is fluid that fills the amniotic sac and we all know it when the ‘waters break’. Amniotic
fluid is rich in different nutrients but also fetal cells and may be sampled for genetic analyses. At first,
amniotic fluid is created from maternal plasma, but after fetal kidneys are formed, it also comprises
excreted fetal urine. With the development of gastrointestinal system, fetus swallows and inhales
amniotic fluid and thus optimal quantity of amniotic fluid is maintained. Evaluation of its quantity is
performed by ultrasound examination.
