Thyroid gland regulates the entire metabolism. Thyroid gland disorders may be in its increased
(hyperthyroidism) or decreased function (hypothyroidism). Sometimes these disorders are first
diagnosed in pregnancy. The complications related to pregnancy are most commonly seen as
hyperemesis (intense vomiting), infertility or recurrent miscarriage. The therapy includes hormonal
substitution in case of hypothyroidism or the use of their antagonists in case of hyperthyroidism.
Proper therapy and hormone monitoring is necessary for full physical, mental and intellectual
development of a child later since hormonal levels affect fetal condition.
